My tutoring approach is very much student-centred, this means that I am very adaptable to the needs of a student. However, my core philosophy is rooted in interaction between myself and the student - this includes conversational learning as well as student-led teaching. I also make an effort to get to know my students learning styles, so when they get stuck I know what tools I can use to help them. Whether that be visual aids, hands-on activities, or just a discussion. I also find review and reflection very impactful when it comes to learning which I implement reviews at the beginning and end of every session.

When it comes to teaching, my methodology revolves around creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. I believe that the best way to connect with students is by making learning fun and relatable, using real-world examples and interactive techniques. I explain complex topics by using the basic building blocks of understanding that my students already have. This allows me to demystify complex subjects by using my students' current knowledge as a foundation. I employ a variety of teaching methods such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and multimedia resources to cater to different learning styles. By actively listening to my students and understanding their unique needs, I customize my approach, whether it's through one-on-one sessions, group discussions, or personalized learning plans. During a typical session, I start by reviewing previous material and addressing any questions. Growing up with such a vast diversity of people, I understood the significance of individuality, whether it is students' characters, or learning methods, every aspect of a student contributes tremendously to their understanding, highlighting the importance of having a tailor-made tutoring program. Fundamentally, I am a big believer in active learning such as explaining concepts in students' own words, drawing mind maps and diagrams, being able to answer questions or applying knowledge to real-life scenarios. I am strongly convinced that this is the most effective way of learning, as well as the most meaningful approach as application of knowledge is what makes education worthwhile. From my previous tutoring experience, I have observed the interconnection between short term and long term memory, through practicing the method of review, revise and repeat, allowing students to vividly engrave knowledge for not only test taking but more so lifelong learning.

To me, the key to learning lies in two things; a comprehension of the question and an understanding of its applications. Often students lack the full picture given that they take formulae for granted without fully understanding their applications, leading to a loss of the former. Otherwise, they are not accustomed to algebraic manipulation or efficient problem-solving methods, leading to a loss of the latter. As a way to compensate for both, I help students develop a hands-on learning approach by providing a comprehensive overview of course content followed by detailed applications through common and typical exam-style questions. By demonstrating logical thought processes and problem-solving techniques, I wish to empower students with a confidence and strong grasp of course content.

I believe that engaging with students on a personal level, building a deep connection, and using that familiarity to strive for growth is essential. The answers will always be there - but a student's willingness or motivation to learn might not. As such, I aim to assist all students from the formulaic, memorization aspect of education to the mental fluidity and accountability that one builds through their journey. I truly emphasise the success of the students above all else, as I believe that is the most important.

My tutoring approach changes depending on the student. There is no single approach to teaching every student, as they all think differently. However, something important that I keep in mind while tutoring is that I should be a supplement to the actual teacher of the course. My ultimate goal while tutoring is to help my student achieve independence and eventually be able to keep up with the course easily without me. Most student's issues arise with foundational material that is not covered in class and understanding of their teacher. I first try to figure out my students' way of thinking to be able to help them. Once we have established this and they are more comfortable with their current work, I begin to help them build a solid base of fundamental knowledge so that they will be able to learn their course material comfortably without me as soon as possible. If the student is currently not taking a class and I have the primary responsibility of teaching, I make sure to reduce memorization as much as possible. Instead, I emphasize understanding to ensure long-term success for the student.

I am also a firm believer that tutoring should be a holistic approach, and my goal with students is never to just have them memorize the information; rather, I want to help them truly understand and grasp the concepts that support the information. My tutoring approach is very much tailored to each individual student. Everyone has a style that they like to learn with and I want to figure out that style first and foremost before we begin. Once we start tutoring I try and work using the style students like, whether it be showing a sample question and explaining how to solve it and letting them try it out or walking through step by step. Along with teaching the specified material, I teach techniques on how to approach new problems or topic so they can apply it to future work and subjects.

Having myself experienced a variety of tutors throughout my academic journey, I know first hand the needs of students who seek tutoring. I believe the most valued point as a tutor is to have a clear understanding of the area of trouble and follow different approach depending on areas of knowledge. In maths, I believe it is important to develop a full proof method that can apply to any problem while examining certain special cases. In physics and Chemistry as well as Economics, it is important for problem solving to understand the full mechanics of a concept so that it can be applied in any scenario.

I prioritize creating an open, supportive, and interactive learning environment with students to ensure that they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and challenges. Recognizing that each student has unique learning strategies, I adapt my teaching approach (whether that means more problem-solving, lectures, or interactive-based learning, etc...) to best cater to their needs. I want to guide students toward the answer and make sure they fully understand the concepts, as opposed to pure memorization. I hope that students will eventually be able to talk through and teach these concepts themselves. Most importantly, I want to cultivate a love of learning and curiosity in any student I teach.

Having spent years in public speech and debate, I have learned that breaking an idea down to its simplest terms with multiple viewpoints is the most effective way to convey a message. Looking at something from one angle sometimes doesn't allow complete concept comprehension. Because of this, my go-to teaching style is coming up with many ways of explaining the same thing to maximize the chance of grasping an idea. Having multiple ways to view one topic opens the mind to a deeper understanding and a complete enrichment in learning. To promote this, I let the students do the thinking while prompting them in the right direction when needed. I adapt to how students think and fit my teaching style with their pace and problem-solving conventions. I tailor-make every lesson for every student. Ultimately, it is my goal to encourage my students to make a habit out of approaching problems through multiple, and perhaps even unconventional, methods to always keep trying new things.

I specifically chose to be a TA for Advanced Algebra due to the challenge it gives me to explain complicated numbers and formulas in approachable ways for students with varying senses and strengths in numeracy and math. I understand that students have different levels of background knowledge, and I always quickly adapt to their level of knowledge and learning preferences. If possible, I always explain difficult concepts in numerous relatable ways and teach multiple approaches that students can use to tackle specifically difficult problems. Through being a swim instructor, I have adopted the teaching style of focusing on the small details in students' learning and making lessons fun and enjoyable.

While I understand that different students learn through different methods and speeds, I am a firm believer that consistent practice and interactive study is the best way to internalize concepts for future application. Throughout lessons, while I will lecture if needed, I prefer to work through problem sets, ask questions, and clarify understanding through practice rather than memorization. By this methodology, students are able to think on their feet when approached with an unforeseen problem or difficult concept. I think that one to one tutoring is a great opportunity to see difficult subjects in a new light, and ultimately, I aim to enrich curiosity and passion for learning in any student I teach.

When it comes to teaching, especially in a tutoring setting, it is crucial to build a collaborative partnership with my student. As mentioned in my biography, I feel that education should be something that excites students. So I tend to open my lessons by getting to know my student, to gain a better understanding of what type of learner they are and ultimately try to connect their genuine interests to their education. Beyond forming a collaborative partnership with the student, I also try to work with their parents to gain a better understanding of what they are hoping to get out of these lessons. Whether it simply be better grades or study habits, I always do my best to satisfy my clients needs. I also try to make myself available through email with my students, so they can communicate any queries they may have outside of designated class times. As I understand that an hour or two every week may not be sufficient.
