About Me

I'm Anika, a second-year Molecular and Cell Biology student at UC San Diego. I'm passionate about learning, and love to go down rabbit holes of information on different topics. I work in a lab, conducting research in structural biochemistry and cell biology. Aside from the sciences, I also love the humanities, particularly literature and reading. In my free time I like to listen to music, rock climb and to the beach, play volleyball with friends, and crochet.

Academic Qualifications

During high school I achieved top scores in AP courses including Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Macro/Microeconomics, English Literature, English Language, and World History, receiving an AP Scholar with Distinction Award. Currently in university, I maintain strong academic standing while taking rigorous upper division courses in my department. I am an honors student, and have achieved this through my academic performance.

Tutoring Experience

I have been a tutor with Stryv for over a year, and I have extensive tutoring experience beyond that. I work with a variety of age groups, primarily in middle through high school across various subjects. I also volunteer at my university as a tutor for upper division biology courses, and work closely with professors in my department to offer supplemental instruction. I was a Humanities TA for a ninth grade course, and I also have experience teaching biology in test-preparation settings. I have worked with on-level, honors, and AP students to achieve their academic goals. My lessons tend to be interactive and feature active learning and problem-solving heavily, as opposed to a more passive lecture style.

Tutoring Approach

My goal is to make sure students feel confident in their capabilities both on the class level and beyond. I tend to structure my lessons specifically to client needs, and alter my teaching style based on how they learn best. I aim to make concepts engaging and accessible. I'm always willing to spend extra time on a problem or goal in order to make sure students are best prepared to encounter it in a different context down the line. While I understand that different students learn through different methods and speeds, I am a firm believer that consistent practice and interactive study is the best way to internalize concepts for future application. Throughout lessons, while I will lecture if needed, I prefer to work through problem sets, ask questions, and clarify understanding through practice rather than memorization. By this methodology, students are able to think on their feet when approached with an unforeseen problem or difficult concept. I think that one to one tutoring is a great opportunity to see difficult subjects in a new light, and ultimately, I aim to enrich curiosity and passion for learning in any student I teach.
