About me
Kate is an HKIS Class of '26 alum, now a freshman at the University of Toronto, teaching English, humanities, and social sciences to help students develop critical thinking and communication skills. She is bilingual in Cantonese and English, and loves teaching because it deepens her own understanding while motivating her to work harder for her students. Beyond academics, she is passionate about the performing arts as a saxophone player and leader in jazz and school band, and volunteers as a Community Ambassador for Swire Properties and with the refugee union.
Qualifications
Kate earned perfect 5s on AP English Literature, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP United States Government. She currently attends the University of Toronto's Victoria One Program.
Experience
Kate has been a Stryv tutor since 2024, teaching general math and English to students in grades 5-9. Additionally, she has assisted in teaching drama to children aged 5–8 for Shakespeare4all.
Teaching approach
Kate goes through school work and answers questions to identify focus areas, then works through practice questions while giving students more independence as they grasp concepts. To ensure productive sessions, she tackles basic concepts before moving to practice questions, focusing on theory and process over simply getting the answer. She assigns minimal homework on top of existing school work as needed.
