About me
Tongan is an IBDP2 student at ISF Academy, originally from Shanghai and bilingual in English and Mandarin, teaching IB Biology, Psychology, English, and ACT prep to fellow students. As a dedicated student-athlete competing in track, cross-country, and volleyball, she understands the balance between academic excellence and personal passions. Beyond the classroom, she has spent three years as a sailing instructor at RHKYC and enjoys staying active at the gym.
Qualifications
Tongan achieved a predicted 7/7 in IB HL Biology, Psychology, and SEHS, and scored 34 composite on the ACT with 35 in English and 36 in Reading. Additionally, she received subject awards in English Literature and SEHS, and was shortlisted for the Biology S.T. Yau High School Science Award (2025). Her academic excellence earned her the ISF Academy Special Talent Scholarship and ISF Academy Honours recognition.
Experience
Tongan has experience as a peer tutor helping students with IB subjects, specializing in natural sciences with a biology focus, literature, and humanities. Throughout this work, she has supported students across IBDP and IBMYP curricula. Additionally, she has worked with children ages 5 and up, including individuals with special needs.
Teaching approach
Tongan adapts her approach by age level, using games and storytelling to build interest with younger students while taking a goal-oriented approach with older students, practicing with past-paper or IB-style questions to build test confidence and subject understanding. She briefly summarizes content and sets clear learning goals each class, ensuring understanding of each topic before moving to the next. Throughout lessons, she encourages curiosity and critical thinking through conceptual discussion.
