About me
Tim is a freshman at university and Island School alum passionate about math for its problem-solving nature and puzzle-like qualities, teaching a wide range of IB, AP, and A-Level subjects in math, physics, and economics. He loves seeing students understand new concepts and sharing his passion for mathematics through those breakthrough moments. Outside academics, he enjoys hiking, playing the saxophone, and watching movies, and has organized his school's charity week and volunteered to help stray animals.
Qualifications
Tim achieved straight 7s in IB Math Analysis and Approaches HL and is predicted 43/45 in the IB Diploma, with additional strengths in IB Economics HL and IB Physics SL. He scored 1560 on the SAT and won his school's Canadian Senior Math Competition in both Y12 and Y13. Currently, he is majoring in mathematics at Boston College and received the Principal's Award for Academic Excellence in Y13.
Experience
Tim has over 2 years of experience tutoring Mathematics across IB, IGCSE, AP, and SAT curricula, working with students from Year 4 through Year 13. He served as Head of the Maths Enrichment Club at IS for 2 years, where he developed engaging approaches to advanced mathematical concepts. Throughout his tutoring career, he has helped students achieve strong outcomes, including guiding 3 students to achieve grade 9 in IGCSE Maths from grade 6.
Teaching approach
Tim uses the Feynman Technique and holds a stern belief in grasping concepts first, starting sessions with warm-up problems before tackling difficult problems on the same topic and ending with students recapping the lesson back to him. For younger students, he focuses on keeping lessons interactive and engaging, while for IB and IGCSE students, he assigns topic-based past paper questions ranging in difficulty. Throughout, he creates custom practice problems specifically targeting each student's weak points, using a systematic and formulaic approach that rewards both memorization and understanding.
