About me
Marie-Lou is a fourth-year biotechnology student at HKUST and French International School alum, teaching IB and AP sciences and French across multiple levels. She is passionate about biology and chemistry, finding joy in breaking down complex ideas to make them accessible, and speaks English, French, and Mandarin to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. As a former netball team captain and older sister, she brings leadership and a genuine commitment to helping others learn and grow, believing in paying forward the support that shaped her own journey.
Qualifications
Marie-Lou is a fourth-year Biotechnology student at HKUST (School of Science, Group B: Biology & Chemistry), with additional focus on entrepreneurship, AI, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering. She has demonstrated consistently strong performance in upper-level biology and chemistry subjects, supported by extensive laboratory and data-analysis experience. Additionally, she completed the French Baccalauréat with scores of 17/20 in SVT (Life and Earth Sciences) and 16/20 in Physics–Chemistry.
Experience
Marie-Lou tutored a Grade 9 student for one year to prepare for the French Brevet exam, supporting all subjects, and regularly assists her two younger sisters (ages 17 and 12) with homework, exam preparation, and study strategies across multiple subjects. She has also tutored younger children in French, focusing on building foundational language skills and confidence in speaking, reading, and writing. Additionally, she has provided general academic support to primary and secondary students, using her trilingual ability in English, French, and Mandarin to support learners from different language backgrounds.
Teaching approach
Marie-Lou starts each lesson by checking what the student finds difficult and what they want to improve, then breaks topics into small, clear steps using simple examples, especially in biology and chemistry. She asks students to explain concepts back in their own words to ensure genuine understanding, adapting her approach based on the learner—using more interactive and visual explanations for younger students while focusing on practice questions and past papers for exam preparation. Throughout lessons, she creates short, targeted practice tasks based on weak areas and ends with a quick recap and 1–2 clear goals for next time, emphasizing understanding ideas over memorizing steps.
