Hi! My name is Laura, I'm currently a first-year at Boston University studying Cellular, Molecular Biology, and Genetics with a minor in Data Science. I recently graduated from Hong Kong International School (HKIS), which I attended for 6 years. Originally from Lisbon, Portugal, I've lived in the United States and Hong Kong for most of my life and am grateful to hold a global cultural and professional perspective. I'm passionate about the field of biotechnology, business, genomics, innovation, fashion and sustainability, and have worked on numerous projects over the years to fulfill such interests! At Boston University, I'm a brother of Kappa Theta Phi—a professional co-ed technology fraternity that prepares undergraduates for internships in the field of technology and life beyond educational pursuit. I'm also a member and co-producer of a production for the Wandering Minds theatre group, fulfilling my rich interest in the theatre arts that began in high school where I served as the president of the International Thespian Society Troupe (an honors society for theatre). As a passionate public speaker, I co-led the Forensics Speech and Debate Team at HKIS, as well as the Biology Olympiad club; organising 200+ attendee, district-wide events for local schools to compete at HKIS. To extend my love for the community I was part of, I was an ambassador for Hong Kong International School for 5 years (throughout 8th grade until graduation), a role in which I led school-wide tours for prospective students and their families, as well as represented HKIS at 300+ attendee open-house panels. I was also a two-time TEDx speaker for the TEDxYouth club at HKIS, and played outside for our school's D1 women's varsity volleyball team. Finally, I designed clothes for INTERACT, Hong Kong International School's annual charity fashion show during my senior year; learning how to produce clothes from scratch or re-utilize and transform old clothes really pushed my resourcefulness and flexibility in terms of adapting to new challenges, which I truly cherished.
In High School, my courseload included AP Biology (5), AP Psychology (5), AP English Language and Composition (5), AP Chemistry (4), AP English Literature (5), AP Macroeconomics (5), AP Microeconomics (4), Honors Geometry, Honors Biology, Honors Advanced Algebra, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics, and received the annual Honor Roll certification for a GPA of 3.5+ all four years. At Boston University, I am currently enrolled in Biology 107, Chemistry 101, Chinese (Third Semester), as well as Writing: Horror, Film, and Philosophy (a required credit), and my midpoint GPA is a 4.0. Additionally, I received a silver medal in the International Psychology Olympiad (top 5-20% of scorers), as well as an $8,000HKD Scholarship titled the James Handrich grant which funds student-initiated projects that serve the community as a whole. Lastly, I was awarded an AP Scholar with Distinction award by College Board (granted for achieving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken), and was inducted into Hong Kong International School's National Honors Society chapter in 9th grade.
Having tutored for Stryv for approximately four years, I've sustained a two-year client relationship tailoring to different learning styles as a student grows and evolves as a learner. I teach primarily middle and high school students, but am more than open to all ages and learning styles! My strengths in terms of tutoring subjects include STEM courses (particularly Biology and Math), as well as the Humanities and essay writing skills. With a long-term client, I was able to see clear growth in terms of student performance and a growing love for learning that I aim to spread through my teaching style. Additionally, with my experience as a Math and Science tutor for the Hong Kong International High School (2 years), I tutored primarily advanced Biology through one-on-one lessons, as well as organised and led larger group review sessions of up to 30 students at a time.
In a typical tutoring session, I guide my student through previously assigned work (or course homework) the student has already completed, and spend typically 15-20 mins revising mistakes (in a step-by-step method) and catering to their specific areas of struggle. Following, I will introduce new content in a half-lecture half-activity style teaching period; involving imagery, several different explanations for maximum content retention, as well as regular questions to ensure efficient student learning. Lastly, we will typically go over practice problems and real-world applications that may help the student better retain or understand content. I have a very open, relaxed tutoring approach that allows students to feel comfortable in making mistakes, and excited about their learning.
