About Me

I am a 12th-grade student at HKIS and am extremely passionate about teaching. I love history, social studies, and math, and have grown up speaking Mandarin and Cantonese fluently. As the oldest of 3 siblings, I have grown up as a role model and teacher my entire life. My interest in teaching has extended to my experience as a Teacher's assistant at a summer school in Boston, where I got to shadow a Chinese teacher and even teach my own lessons! Besides academic subjects, I am also a passionate swim coach and have taught kids around my neighborhood how to swim since I was 14.

Academic Qualifications

I have taken 5 APs so far: AP Chinese, AP European History, AP US History, AP Chemistry, and AP English Language, on which I scored all 5s. I plan on taking 6 more tests this year: AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Comparative Government, AP US Government, AP Calculus AB, and AP English Literature. I have a 1540 SAT and have been awarded the National Merit Scholarship letter of commendation for the PSAT.

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring Chinese and Math at various levels since I was 11, and even have experience in teaching young children to swim. I have taught many different subjects across all grade levels, from Second Grade Chinese to Tenth Grade History. My experience teaching at a Chinese summer school grew my teaching skills, as I learned to curate lesson plans for big classes and adapt to the different language abilities my students had. Some highlights were helping a non-native Mandarin speaker score an A on Chinese IGCSE and a young 6th grader conquer fractions.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that students learn best when they interact with their material, whether through flashcards, games, or mind maps. In my Chinese classes, I like to break down my student's material into bite-sized chunks for them to process, and we play games with the new vocabulary to familiarize them with the words. Whenever I feel that they are getting distracted or bored, I switch approaches and try a new way to help them out, whether it be watching a video or singing a song. For students who are not native speakers, I speak to them in Chinese and then repeat the same thing in English to expose them to more vocabulary. In my Math classes, I structure my lessons based on my students' questions with homework and work from there. I spend half the time working through practice problems with them, backtracking whenever they feel lost. Then, I summarize the main takeaways from our lesson and come up with a few problems for them to practice. I try to let my students try the questions a few times before I step in and give them hints, giving them time to recall their knowledge and practice their skills.
